Local NHS worker Fiona Mills selected as UKIP candidate for the Copeland by-election

UKIP has selected Fiona Mills as their candidate in the forthcoming Copeland by-election. Fiona, who was recently elected to the UKIP NEC, works in the local NHS and was the UKIP candidate in Carlisle in the General Election.

The hustings were held on Friday 13th January at the Summergrove Halls in Hensingham, near Whitehaven.  Fiona was up against stiff competition from 3 other excellent candidates, each of whom would have been an asset to Copeland.  Her endorsement by members was approved by the UKIP National Executive Committee and we are delighted that she is standing.

After NEC approval was announced, Fiona said:

“I am honoured and delighted to have been selected by the UKIP West Cumbria branch to be their Copeland candidate. As UKIP Cumbria Chairman I travel all over the county and it is my feeling that people want a Member of Parliament who will truly represent them. I will do precisely that.

“The main issues in Copeland are health service provision and the nuclear industry. UKIP strongly supports both. I have worked in the NHS for 24 years, I’m passionate about improving and preserving it and I’m proud to have helped write UKIP’s excellent Health Policy. We have solutions to the current health crises.

“Copeland voted 62% to leave the EU and what better way to send a message to the government that we want a full Brexit as soon as possible than to return a UKIP MP!

“I hope to meet and talk to as many constituents as possible so that I can take on board their concerns. Unlike other parties, UKIP does not have a party whip so I am completely free to be the people’s voice.”

UKIP Leader Paul Nuttall said, “Fiona Mills is a passionate advocate for people, both in her politics and her work for Cumbria’s NHS. I cannot imagine anybody better to represent the people of Copeland, and I believe that in a constituency that firmly backed Brexit, in her they will find somebody on their wavelength and prepared to put in the extra yard for their interests. I am delighted that she has been selected as the UKIP candidate.”
